  1. Don’t use flashing lights: Using the flash lights is illegal and are reserved for official non-civilian vehicles – fire departments, police officers, ambulance and other emergency or special services. Flashing neon underglow is illegal and distracting to other drivers. Flashing light restriction includes rotating, oscillating, color changing, moving, fading and any other non-stationary or steady emitted glow.
  2. Don’t use restricted colors:  Most commonly prohibited colors for vehicles lights are – blue, red and green. Blue and red lights are reserved for emergency vehicles and hence banned across all states. Some states permit specific colors for underglow. Each state has different color restrictions which need to be followed. There are some states which prohibit the possession and installation of certain colors, which is applicable to LED underglow as well. LED lights can emit different colors and shades.
  3. Don’t expose light bulbs: When installing the underglow, ensure that the light sources are not directly exposed. The halo glow effect under the car can be made even if the neon tubes or LED diodes. Hide the bulbs underneath the car.
  4. Don’t expose the light outside the vehicle dimension: Ensure that the light emission from the underglow does not fall outside the vehicle dimension. Be specific when you install the lights to under the chassis of the vehicle and is not directly visible from sides.
  5. Don’t light the underglow while driving: If the lights are banned in a particular state, make sure to turn off the lights when driving the car. It is a vanity item and is not worth the legal fees attachment.
  6. Don’t use license plate illumination: There are many enthusiasts who install aftermarket lights near the registration plates. Most of the states laws require the license plate illumination to be white and clearly legible from 25 feet or more. Installing additional neon or LED lights near the registration plate will make it difficult to read the number which is the reason it is not recommended to be used.
  7. Don’t use underglow lights if it is illegal: Until the state legislation changes sometime in the future, it is highly recommended to prohibit the non-factory car lights including the neon glow.

If it is illegal to use the underglow flashing light, there is no get away from the law. When used illegally, you will be caught by the police or state patrol and end up paying unnecessary fine and will be forced to remove the underglow lights.

The municipalities, cities or counties may have exceptions to state laws or even have additional restrictions. It is best to contact the local police department to get a first hand information on whether underglow is legal.
